Community Workshop:
Building Healthy Communities Through Food
In 2006, CFJC hosted two workshops on increasing access to healthy foods and making
change in their communities. The workshops were an opportunity for youth and adults
to meet and learn from others who are organizing to bring healthy foods into their
communities, and build connections with local farms. From starting farmers' markets
to growing food, participants had the opportunity to learn how to turn their ideas
into action. This workshop also included discussion on how social and environmental
injustice affects healthy food access. It was an opportunity to build relationships
and get connected to the larger food justice movement in California.
The response was overwhelming. Both workshops drew participants of a wide variety
of ages, communities, and backgrounds. Over 90% of the participants rated the event
as Excellent or Good, and over 80% found that the workshop increased their understanding
of community food issues. Many of them found the networking they were able to do at the
workshop to be particularly helpful, as well as the afternoon roundtables. Participants
said they felt inspired to start or continue their work in their communities, and several
looked forward to sharing the information they learned with friends, family, coworkers,
schoolmates, and others in their community. The full evaluations as well as the brochures
and handouts for each workshop can be viewed at the links below.
